How to Help MAAW Promote Accounting and Management

The following comments represent some of the complementary e-mail messages I have received over the past several years. I used the senders initials in most cases to protect their privacy. I encourage users to write recommendations for the site. These recommendations and endorsements provide the intrinsic reward that motivates me to keep building this unique accounting archive. If you send a message to endorse the MAAW site, let me know if it's okay to include your name. In any case, it will be greatly appreciated and I will place it on this page, and perhaps in some form of promotional material. Send it to me at jmartin@maaw.info

I complain a lot about the dearth of accounting education blogs and Websites hosted by academic accountants. You will, however, never hear me complain about the wonderful MAAW (mostly history) site hosted by (retired) accounting professor Jim Martin.

Thanks Jim. May you live on forever!

Today I was looking for a quick reminder of Deming’s theory of profound knowledge and ran across your web site. Wow!!! What an amazing collection of great information here!

I recently retired from a long business career and am doing some ad hoc consulting. From time to time I advise folks to be familiar with the classic management and accounting literature. It is great find them on your site!

My very best regards to you!

____________

Dear James,

I just came across your wonderful MAAW website. Are these materials available to use? If so,

1) is there a fee?
2) are the contents stable over, say, a one-year period of time (subject to minor revisions)? [i.e., is it possible to merely give students web-links embedded in a syllabus, and let them view material as needed?]

Thank you very much.

M.

The answers are: There is no fee and the contents are stable. Anyone can use the materials on the MAAW site for educational purposes. I just ask that they indicate the source.

Dear Dr. Martin

I just wanted to drop you a note and tell you how impressed I am with your website. I cannot believe the breadth of topics and knowledge all located in one easy to use (and free) website.

I am an American currently working in the GCC (Oman specifically) training up the locals to take charge of an aluminum smelter recently built by my employer. If you had any idea of how many times I've gone on to your website and pilfered information I swear you'd send me a $10,000 invoice. The local Omani's used to think I was some kind of genius until I gave them the link to your site.

Anyway, I just wanted to let you know how much I appreciate your effort and how much 4 other Omani's appreciate your site. They are all now doing the Gleim study course for CMA certification and tell me that they use your site as a reference for the more advanced topics that lack detail in their study material.

Thanks for making such an effort to bring this type of information to the masses. I can promise you as one of the masses that your effort is appreciated and used.

Regards

Hi James

Thank you for the website, it only took me a few seconds to realize the value of this to my students. I teach in our MS program, and I will certainly be able to use this material in my classes. I will also forward this to our BAP members as well.

Hello Professor,

My name is M. N. and I just want to email you and to tell you thank you for your website. I am doing my final in my Accounting 3 class and am writing a couple paragraphs on the master budget and stumbled on your site. It was crazy to find how much info on your site is exactly what I am looking for. I am currently in process of my Bachelors in Accounting online and in the future I want to get my CMA as well as my masters in Accounting! I was very interested in business and I finally decided to go into accounting because some have said it is the language of business. You said it perfect on your website "The pages of MAAW reveal that management and accounting topics represent a very broad and extremely important area of study for those interested in business in general, as well as those interested in accounting and management". I liked this statement a lot. I guess what I am getting at is thank you for a great site and all the information you have put there. I have been sidetracked multiple different times with the charts and info in your book as well as some of the main topics you have listed. I will continue to use your site for additional research and will pass on to others I come in contact with.

Thank you.

I am very impressed with your maaw website. I don't know how you are able to intellectually cover such a range of topics in detail. I also don't know how you find the time.

(There is more to this note about using the material on the MAAW site in his teaching. I said, use anything you like, just indicate the source.)

I am a South African and am a managing director of a medium sized manufacturer in the timber industry. I was doing an internet search on cost accounting and stumbled on Ch. 2 of your book. I was absolutely amazed at how relevant and understandable the information was made even easier by the graphics. I do not have a formal accounting/financial qualification and intend to do a lot of self-study using your book and site. Will certainly pass it on to colleagues and any accounting students I know. Thank you so much.

I am a student of the Vietnam Executive MBA program (VEMBA) which is provided by University of Hawaii and conducted mostly in Vietnam, and six final weeks in the U.S. We are going to have the Managerial Accounting course early this September. While waiting for the textbook to arrive here in Hanoi and searching into to do my pre-class assignments of this course, I have found your web. This web is what I want to read. I have been instrumental in recognising the need, planning and initiating inclusion of Total Quality Management as a part of Engineering curriculum in North India. Hitherto with formal education in the field, I have endeavored since to dive deeper into what would autogenously drive the QIP (Quality Improvement Programme).

Your resource is, to my knowledge, a mirror of good teaching. Especially the Deming part. Your synthesis of available knowledge, for use of both students and faculty, is commendable. Please accept my heartiest applause for good work.

Professor Martin,

I just found your web site and have been exploring it with great interest. You have a fantastic site! It looks great and the amount of content is staggering.

I am the controller at an aluminum die casting company in East Texas. We have been doing the basics of TOC for several years. Over the last year I have started posting some of what we have been doing as a hobby site.

Would it be ok with you if I linked to some of the pages on your site?

Sincerely,

Dr. Martin,

I am assembling an annotated directory of internet resources for my machining students at the college where I teach. I'm convinced there is much more into now on the web than in any handbook on the subject. When I came upon your site today it took my breath away. How in the world did you possibly have the time to accomplish all this?

...

I thank you for amazing energy. Perhaps now I'll be able to make sense out of accounting as I look through your site!

Dear Dr. Martin

I have recently accepted a job in the cost management department of a smallish mfg. company. I have lots of accounting experience but not in cost. I happened upon your website and book as I was looking up terminology and I want to thank you. The first four chapters answered a number of my questions, and I will now work my way thru the next 4. It was amazing to me that a book of this quality is available on the web. You have really helped me. I am now only three or four steps behind rather than being totally at the end of the line. ...

My name is J. F. and I am a USF alumnus and Georgia Tech MBA. I am currently CFA for a Sugar Mill in Central America. I found your review of the Goal very interesting, as me and other fellow members of the management team are currently reading and discussing it. I was wondering if you would know where to find chapter study questions for the book, that may enhance our discussions.

Many thanks for our valuable help.

___________

Dr. Martin,

I just wanted to send you an email to say thank you. I am a student at the University of South Dakota and I am currently enrolled in a Cost Accounting class there. ... Until I read your book online, I had never even heard of the term "costing system", and hadn't the slightest clue on how to analyze one, or even conceptualize one... You do a phenomenal job of explaining the concepts themselves. I first read your "Five Parts of an Accounting System and even that was an "ah-ha moment" for me. Anyway... I just wanted to share my thoughts and experience and thank you for putting your hard work out for anyone to use. To offer information like that, and to make it so accessible even to a beginner, yet trustworthy, is really quite special. Your work is greatly appreciated. I really feel more confident in being able to pass the final exam in two weeks because of your book. Thank you! I feel like the cloud has finally been lifted.
